Butterflies always make me smile. They take flight when their wings are warmed to 18 degrees Celcius or above and when the conditions are right their colours fill the sky.

Their wings are covered in overlapping scales and it is the pigment, shape and structure of these scales that give each butterfly their unique colour and pattern. They are nature’s art palette in miniature.

This piece was inspired by the many different patterns that fill the sky on butterfly wings. However instead of filling my palette with colour, I restrained myself and decided on a minimalistic approach to let the intricate patterns, take centre stage.
